Scientists at University of Calgary are the first to find an earlier anonymous cell population in the pericardial fluid discovered around the heart within the sac. The finding can result in to new therapies for patients with damaged hearts. The research spearheaded by Drs. Paul Kubes, Paul Fedak, and Justin Deniset is posted in the Immunity journal.
The Kubes lab, in association with the Fedak laboratory, discovered that Gata6+ pericardial cavity macrophage (a specific cell) assists cure a damaged heart in mice. The cell was found in the sac in the pericardial fluid around the heart of a mouse suffering from heart damage. Operating with Fedak, incoming Director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta and a cardiac surgeon, the same cells were also discovered inside the human pericardium of individuals with damaged hearts, verifying that the repair cells provide the commitment of a new treatment for people with heart disorder.
